I realized that I needed some parasols for a café on at the market square. I had no idea how I would make them, but I knew what texture to use, the Sixties Swirl by Kochubey, that could easily be a thirties swirl.

So, I started with FilterForge to render a texture for this, and made it large enough as it is a non tiling texture.

Isn’t it gorgeous, so lovely retro in the design. Now, I start up Cheetah3D and create a circular plane. Setting radial points to 12, and 2 for the plane.

Now we select the center polygon and shrink that.

Now, we lift it upwards.

Now we go to line mode and select each second line around the parasol. and move them upwards.

We make a Catmull-Clark subdivision on the object to smoothen it.

Now, we shrink the selected lines like this.

Now we Catmull-Clark subdivide again.

And here we have a parasol. Tomorrow we will finish this.

Ok, bakery part two, we where making the chimney when we ran out of time yesterday, so we will continue with that one today.

We need a chimney texture, and I created one using FilterForge and my bricks filter. I like this filter as it is very versatile. Here is the texture map.

And here is the Normal map.

Now we apply this texture to the chimney in Cheetah3D, using cylinder UV mapping, except for the top, where we use cubic.

The chimney was still to wide in the top, so we have to use the Taper tool one more round on it.

At last, we create a round plane that we set just black color to as a texture, and put that in the lower end of the chimney. As you can see, I didn’t bother to UV map that end, so the texture is totally weird and off.

This new house need a new trapdoor on the roof, so I render a new trapdoor texture in FilterForge with my cottage log wall texture. Here is the texture map.

And here is the Normal map.

Now, we place the ring a little closer to the edge t´so the puller hangs over, look much better.

Now we add the trapdoor and the chimney to the building model, and render it.

But something is missing, we need some smoke from the chimney. I add that using OmniGraffle and then place the bakery on the map.

This looks pretty good, I like the puller ring that hangs over the edge, a nice touch.

Now I feel that I need a bakery, it does not only look good, but fit the plot very good as well.

So, start up Cheetah3D and create a box.

You know the drill, clone, shrink, move and boolean remove, I don’t have to show you that again I think.

So, we got what we want, now we need texture, and we use a FilterForge filter called Sand Stone for this. Here is the texture map.

And here is the Normal map.

And when we apply it, we get this nice looking building.

Now, we need a chimney, so we create a pipe object.

We stretch it and set the length polygon count to ten.

Now, we use the Taper tool to shape the chimney.

And a little more in the middle.

So, tomorrow we will finish the bakery.

Now we got up to speed on this, so what next? A I know, the carpet dealer. What is a market without Fine rugs and carpets, hand made, come look look, feel feel. very good price just for you.

We start this with Cheetah3D, as I felt what will be better as a market stand roof for a carpet dealer than a carpet? So let’s create a plane.

We now use one of the carpets we made for this as a texture. We use a Bend to bend it a little.

Setting the transparency to be taken from the Alpha channel.

Now, we use the Magnet tool to make it look hung.

We then create a cylinder, stretch it like a pole, and copy it and place one under each bump.

For these we need wood texture, and I start FilterForge and use a filter called Wood Generator. here is the texture map.

And here is the Normal map.

Applying the texture to the poles using a Cylinder UV mapping works great.

And here is the complete market stand.

Today we’re gonna fix the grinder’s stand, where you can get your knives and axes sharpened.

But first we start FilterForge to play with a filter I did a while back but never polished. I finally found a way to make money with FilterForge, or maybe not.

Here is a pile of copper and small silver coins.

And here are a few larger coins, gold and silver or something similar.

Now we use OmniGraffle to assemble the grinder’s stand, and first of all, we give him a basket with his money. I will have to create a few silhouette figures , like a head, a crown, two swords, all in FilterForge, then I can release this filter to the public.

Now when we got this great money basket, we can concentrate on the rest. I modify a dirt filter from FilterForge 1 and use a shape to make it blur in the outer end.

And another dirt.

Now we assemble it, adding a few items from my repository, like axes, a sickles, a stool and a table.

And when we place it on the market, it looks like this

You can see how much dirt he has spread on the ground.

Today we’re gonna make an item that I found that I did miss, a low basket for fruits or something else.

We start with Cheetah3D and create a round plane.

Now we set it to 90 points around, and two steps for the plane. We then select the center circular polygon, and move it downwards.

Now, we start FilterForge to create a nice weave texture, I use a filter called Basket Weaving, by Constantin Malakov. Here is the texture map.

And the Normal map.

Now, we apply the texture to the to be basket, and UV map it.

We now need a wooden rim to it, so we create a Torus ring, where we set the ring polygons to only four, giving us a square profile on the ring.

Now, back into FilterForge and we use a Filter I made here on 4eyes some time ago, chopped wood. First the texture map

Then the Normal map.

Now, we apply that texture, and UV map it. I used flat mapping as it was hard to map the wood on this shape.

And here it is, a new basket.

I think this basket turned out really good, and tomorrow I think you will see what I wanted to use it for.

Today we will assemble some market stands for the market. Finally put all those pieces to use.

We start OmniGraffle to assemble the millers stand first. Adding the sacks and a crate to the market stand we did before.

Now we attach a market cloth roof to it.

And we place it on the map.

Next up is the fine cloth stand, but we make it a little grungy, using the oil barrels and some planks.

Now we add some cloth rolls to it, and a market stand roof.

And here it is, on the market square somewhere.

Two down, many to go, so we keep working today. We place the wood rack on the wagon we made, and add the wood pile to it, and we got a someone selling fire wood.

The last one today uses our permanent grass clad market roof, adding a lot of different crates to it, we got a nice market stand.

So, now we have placed four market stands on the map, but we still got so much more to do before we can call it a day.

I hope the coming year will be even more interesting, but the uncertainty of the future of Dundjinni and the recent suspension of www.ninegods.com make me a little worried. Where is the map making community moving now? RPGMapshare is still alive and kicking.
