It will be a lot of work in the modeler today. Things like this takes time, if you do want it to look irregular and not machine made.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-01.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, back in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cheetah3d.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cheetah3D<\/a> again, to make steps. So we create a box, and stretch it like a plank. We size it so it goes beyond the lower rope on both sides.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4004\" title=\"ropeb3-01\" src=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To make the illusion of that the plank is tied, we create a square torus ring, place it around the plank, and remove the bottom of the ring with a boolean and another box.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4003\" title=\"ropeb3-02\" src=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We add a rope texture to the illusion rope, and a wood plank texture to the step itself. Then we adjust the height and angle so it follows the sloping rope.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4002\" title=\"ropeb3-03\" src=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"285\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here you can see that we have added a few steps, individually slightly rotating each to give the bridge an irregular shape for the steps. Otherwise, we could just have used the Array and we would have gotten steps with an exact spacing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4001\" title=\"ropeb3-04\" src=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"483\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As you can see, where the gaps between the guide lines are wider, we can fit in a third, smaller plank. We place it in different slots each time, to make the irregularity even better.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4000\" title=\"ropeb3-05\" src=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"383\" height=\"341\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here is a top down render. It was supposed to be the final render, but it turned out that the plank texture was way to dark, so I had to fire up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filterforge.com\/?affiliateid=200100725\" target=\"_blank\">FilterForge<\/a> to create a lighter wood texture. The contrast made the ropes just disappear.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3999\" title=\"ropeb3-06\" src=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-06.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"135\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, this is the new wood plank texture for the steps, first the diffuse map.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-07.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3998\" title=\"ropeb3-07\" src=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-07.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And then the bump map.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-08.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3997\" title=\"ropeb3-08\" src=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"450\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now, just UV map every step, boring work, but important to avoid &#8220;the plastic look&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-09.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3996\" title=\"ropeb3-09\" src=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So, after changing the texture, and then UV map every single step so it looks different from the steps closest to it, we got this rope bridge, a beautiful bridge as Oddball in Kelly&#8217;s Heroes would have put it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3995\" title=\"ropeb3-10\" src=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"1125\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here it is, on a tile for <strong>The Neverending Docks<\/strong>, using the water edges I made previously.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-11.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3994\" title=\"ropeb3-11\" src=\"http:\/\/4eyes.code66.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/ropeb3-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"1246\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I think I would even dare to walk this bridge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today we&#8217;re finally going to add some planks to that bridge, so we can see how it will really look.
