So, were gonna have some fun a few days with this, I promise. And don’t say mad as a hatter one more time.

So, we start Cheetah3D to do the modeling and texturing. First, I am comfortable with that program, and second, it is a very good and solid piece of software, I wish I could say the same thing about Carrara 8 on Mac OS X (I haven’t tested it on Windows), but is is slow, buggy and extremely crash prone.

We create a new Spline, and set out the points like this. The darker the color the later in the chain they are, so you can see how I went around making this. It is very important that the two end point are aligned.

Now, I use the Lathe tool to sweep the Spline 360 degrees, and wow, we got a hat. As you can see, the default is 30 segments, and that will make it look ugly.

I changed that to 90 segments around, and also made some tiny adjustments to the Spline points.

So, Now I start FilterForge and render a bunch of textures. The choice is simple, felt, as it will both be very typical for the time period I’m after, late 1930, and also, felt looks good without spending an eon with the most boring thing there is, UV-Mapping each polygon. I wont show a bunch of textures today, as they will look just as they do in the hat. But I made a whole bag of textures for future use. So, after adding a texture and doing some basic UV-mapping, which was just to tell Cheetah3D to use box map model, this is what we got.

Now, to spice up the hat, I add a ribbon in another color to it.

I then export it using the export script that export both an .obj-file and a .mat-file. Now I start Poser and import the model there, but first I add a baseline figure, V4 (Victoria 4), so I can scale the hat correctly. After some scaling and posing, this is what I get.

She’s looking good in her new hat. Then I export the hat as a Smart Prop, and can use it in DAZ Studio 3.

So, did I miss something? Yes I did, I missed several steps and I will show some of them tomorrow, but now Vicky has a new hat.

So, this is rather unexpected, but I needed to make hats for a special scene in an adventure Im working on.
