I promised plates today, and sure, we will make some plates for our tables.
So, we start Cheetah3D today again, and begin with the classic ball.
We shape it very flat, so it almost like a rounded coin.
Now, the classic clone, move, reshape and the Boolean remove dance, that we have done so many times before.
This looks pretty awesome don’t you think? But when we add texture and render it, a little problem is visible.
It is hard to tell if this is a plate or a sphere, as the brain lack some of the shadows and contours used to determine such things as shapes.
So, we add a small torus around the border of the plate, join the two objects with a Boolean, and set texture to it.
Here you can see the clear shadow left by the torus, makes the brain see the depth even as it is not really there.
And the rendered result is much better, thanks to that small thin line. We use a few different wood textures and make 4 plates, which of one is rather dirty, you never know when you have to make another Orc settlement.
Here, four different plates, shadows added in OmniGraffle. Tomorrow, we will make some mugs. Try to picture now a mug in wood would look like, I got a few ideas, as always, but the hard part is to make them happen.
