This sounds rather stupid don’t you say, making a hole in the ground, but that is just what we will do today. I’m working on some side tiles for The Neverending Docks, which can be used for the natural lakeside tiles.

I build all tiles for the Neverending series in OmniGraffle, so this is no exception.
We start with an empty tile with just the background from the coastal tile. The texture comes from CGTextures and was already tiled.

For the hole, I will be using some stone smudges I’ve done before, also from images from CGTextures. Here are two of them.

First I place some of those smudges, the ones with least rock side look on the tile, rotating them a little randomly.

Then I place the rock side ones in a circle, rotating them so they look like they are a part of a side.

Now, I just need a hole, and I tried to use the gradient fill in OmniGraffle, but that gives a too sharp edge, and the gradient is linear, so I made a very quick filter in FilterForge 2.0 to do this, as it has circular gradients now. Here it is

Now, adding this hole over the stone pile I just made, we got this:

Wow, we got a hole in the ground. Now, I add some details props around it.

OK, now just add some more stuff, and a rope ladder, and we got something that looks really nice.

I hope you liked this little hole making, I did like it anyway.
